Day 01: Arrival in Leh by flight
Fly into Leh in the morning. The flight itself is a great experience - you get a bird's eye view of the Himalaya, with glaciers and impassable mountain passes laid out like a carpet below you. The plane flies low between the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges and lands on the runway running along the Indus Valley. You have just completed one of the greatest flights in the world.
Your taxi is there to welcome you and drive you to your hotel. Today we will take it easy. Leh is at an altitude of 3600m and you will feel the effects of the high altitude as soon as you step out of the plane. We rest today, doing a short walk through Leh, while drinking lots of fluids and sleeping early.
Day 02: Leh sight-seeing
After breakfast we go out into Leh town. Leh used to be the capital of the kingdom of Ladakh. The cityscape is dominated by the old and impressive Leh Palace, the ruins of which are perched atop a short hill overlooking the main bazaar. The palace is undergoing a steady restoration project and you can take a walk through it and imagine how the kings of old lived here centuries before, when the Silk Route ran through the bazaars of Leh, with traders traveling all the way from China through here on their way to ports on the Arabian Sea.
You can take a stroll through the modern version of this bazaar, with present-day traders selling everything from dry apricot, Ladakhi almonds and other types of dry fruit, Ladakhi woolens and traditional yak wool handicraft. You can also find good quality trekking and hiking gear, rucksacks and hiking boots and other types of outdoor equipment.
Towards evening we climb up to the Shanti Stupa and gather under the giant statue of the Buddha to watch the sunset drop over the Ladakh Range, with Stok Kangri peak clearly visible before us.
Day 03: Leh - Khardungla Pass - Nubra Valley
Today we begin our drive into deeper Himalayan territory, to Nubra Valley. We cross Khardungla Pass late in the morning, stopping at the top to take pictures and enjoy the panoramic Himalayan view. Khardungla (5602m), is the highest motorable mountain pass in the world and is the highest point of our tour. Nubra Valley lies along the ancient trade routes of the Silk Road and used to connect northern India to western China. We find sandy deserts with twin-humped Bactrian camels here. We can even take a ride on them before we check into our campsite accommodations, with dinner under the stars.
Day 04: Nubra Valley - Leh
We drive back to Leh today, stopping along the way to take pictures. We get into Leh by evening and enjoy dinner at our hotel.
Day 05: Leh - Pangong Lake
Pangong Lake is the largest brackish water in Asia, and two-thirds of it lie in China. We drive to the Lake today, 120km from Leh. This is a drive up the Indus valley and we reach the lake by afternoon. These are the real Himalayan highlands, with the waters of the lake stretching far into the horizon. Camp out under the stars and dream of highland mountain landscapes.
Day 06: Pangong Lake - Leh (with Indus Valley sightseeing through Shey and Thiksay)
We begin our drive back to Leh. Today will be a busy day, a cultural experience while we stop along the way to see the many Buddhist monasteries and ancient Ladakhi forts of the Indus valley - Shey, Thiksay and Hemis.
Day 07: Lower Indus Valley sightseeing (Magnetic Hill, Indus-Zanskar Sangam, Alchi), back to Leh
This day we tour the lower part of the Indus Valley, driving westward from Leh along the highway that goes all the way to Srinagar. There are many sights along this stretch of the Indus river - the confluence of the Zanskar and Indus rivers at Nimmo and the ancient monastery at Alchi that provides a rich Buddhist cultural experience.
We drive back to Leh in the evening, wth a quick tour through the bazaar to stock up on Ladakhi souvenirs for friends and family back home.
